I'm having a really hard time trying to install the driver's side manifold in my 70. It's contacting the steering box and preventing it from sliding forward into position. Does the motor have to be lifted slightly on the drivers side to install, or is there something I'm missing?

Please take into account your motor mounts. I have encountered many that have "smooshed" and actually make the engine bit lower. And also due to the weight...the motor mount perches can drop. I have had to "pull" them up before...and also stretch the cradle at the upper control arm perches so shims could be installed in the upper control arm mounting points for camber/caster adjustments for wheel alignments....which is common....and why off-set upper control arm shafts are being offered for a "quick-fix". Doing all this "pulling" can was also due to how close the crankshaft pulley was getting to the cradle. Not that you need them ...but mid-year big-blocks had shims between the motor mount and block.
i spent a couple hours fabricating two shims, raised the engine, removed the mounts, installed the shims, reattached the mounts and lowered the engine. bolt holes on the horns wouldn't line up with the mounts! did it again to remove the shims, and while i had the engine up about an inch, i slipped the manifold into place and lowered the engine. everything fits perfectly! what a waste of half a day!!

Glad it fit perfectly.
If your motor mounts did not have the slotted holes in them and they were a dedicated hole...that is why the shims did not work. Also I believe that the shims are about 1/8" thick. And only one per side.

it wasn't your fault. what you said about the horns drooping made sense to me. i just can't understand why the manifold wouldn't slide into position with the motor resting on the mounts, but once i raised the engine and bolted into place it clears everything with plenty of room.
