Default Question on big block pulley set

So I am still trying to find a pulley set for my 454 I just bought. I found that mr gasket offers a set of pulleys (crank, short water pump, and alternator) for BBC for MUCH cheaper than corvette specific ones. I have a corvette specific water pump which i believe is 1/8" longer than the short water pump from what I have been told. Has anybody used this kit and just put some spacers on the crank and alternator? I'm not interested in keeping this original if you couldn't tell.

Wasn't exactly what I was looking for but I guess it gets my mind moving. I wasn't planning on doing a serpentine conversion, But maybe. I was hoping to just stick with the v belt. So... Anybody use the mr gasket pulleys or something like this with spacers?

Being you don't mind about originality...... here's what I did in my 77 and I am pretty sure it don't get much cheaper than this. Hope it helps, good luck.

Hey john. I love the engine bay. Any problem with the crank pulley hitting the front crossmember since you are using the long water pump? Also where did you get those set of pulleys?

Thank you.

Zero clearance problems down at the cross member. The alt is mounted by any camaro? chevelle? bracket, the ps is a stock pump with the small block pulley, sitting in a standard BB vette ps pump mount with a plate behind it to build it out about 1/2 inch. Ran a little piece of steel from the pump to a bolt on the water pump to snug up on the belt. The used pump and crank pulleys are all over ebay. If you want I can get measurements of them for you.

That would be such a great help. As long as you don't mind me copying a bit of your ingenuity

call corvette salvage yards like Doc's in Tulsa or J&D in California, or put a WTB on the parts section!

Will any 454 pulleys work??? like from a Impala etc???

It might help to get the part number you need to research it.

No problem. Crank and water pump pulleys are 5 1/2" wide x 3" deep. Good luck.

I did not use corvette specific pulleys and all is well on mine. I do not have a/c, so not sure if it would change anything. My power steering pump has a double pulley on it and I am using and aftermarket one pc.
The crank pulley and water pump pulley ( using a corvette short water pump), were also after market set for late 60s big blocks. The alternater lower bracket was after market late 60s big block and the upper bracket is the original from my small block with a 3/4" spacer at the block. Everything seems to line up pretty straight. right now I have one belt that goes around the crank/waterpump/alt. and one belt that goes around the crank/water pump/power steering.

I don't know if you already decided on a set and bought them, but I'll put this out there anyway. Within the last year I needed to replace the PS pulley on my avatar car. I found a Camaro parts shop on line that I'd done business with before, got their info on the part, did the research and determined that the pulley was made in America, and bought it. When I mounted it to the PS pump it was clearly & badly warped. I ended up getting a pulley from March finished in black so it would look correct- it was perfect.

I bring this up because apparently some of the repro stuff out there is junk, even if it's made in our country. The pulleys on my '69 427 Vette are also made by March. Quality pieces.

I'm in the same boat. I want to upgrade to a 6-rib serpentine without paying a thousand bucks and I want it to be polished or chrome. I have a 69 with a ZZ454 and I've contacted a ton of people selling the conversions. They all say nothing for the SWP. I run an electric fan on the front of the radiator and a flex fan on the water pump. The fan has a 2.5" spacer behind it to keep it close to the radiator. Since I don't have A/C, I was going to move the alternator to the passenger side so I can get to the PS pump better.

March info:
http://www.marchperf.com/pg25.html

I started with what was basically a 20550 and then added the larger crank pulley to improve cooling at low speed (speeds up the water pump) so ended up with a 20560. Works great with lots of room. Got it used with PS and water pump at a good price.

Clears stock hood and frame on my '75. Alternator is a high output 10SI.

Need a better pic.

Thanks Steve, that's something for me to look into. Did you keep your Saginaw PS pump? Also, wouldn't adding a larger pulley slow it down?

I have a remote PS pump that I got with the setup. However, March does make a setup that uses the Saginaw pump.

A larger crank pulley speeds everything up since the belt moves further for every revolution of the crank. That is the difference of the March setups.
