Default Another zbar bracket question

Yet another 4-speed conversion here. I am getting ready to weld the cross-shaft zbar bracket to the frame.

Should the zbar be tight against the engine side ball stud or should it be backed off a little to allow the engine to move?

When I line it up acording to the dimensions given in other posts it is not tight. When it is tight on the engine side the bracket seems too far inboard.

You can't really tell much from the pic but here it is anyway.

Hi Tom,
I don't know if this will help... I have 11 3/8" from the face of the engine block boss that the ball stud threads into to the inner side of the z-bar bracket on the frame.
How that distance is used up is determined by how far the ball stud on the engine side of the z-bar is turned into the block.
I left set room on the stud on the engine so I could tighten it or loosen it.
I set the z-bar just snug thinking that the nylon seat would absorb any side to side engine movement while the shape of the seats and ball studs take up any up and down movement.
Regards,
Alan

Yes that did help Alan,

When I put the bracket at 11 3/8" it looks right. It is not tight against the engine ball stud but the slack can be taken up by backing the ball stud out of the engine like you did or even adding flat washers as shims between the frame side ball stud and bracket. Of course non of this is mentioned in the AIM but it seems right.

Thanks for the measurement,
Tom
