Default tank sending unit.

I installed a new sending unit .New seal and new locking ring.If you move the locking ring the least little bit it leaks. This locking ring is just like the old one.Once you tighten it up its snug but you can pry it side to side.Almost like it's too small. Ordered correct one . slightest movement and gas starts leaking..what am I missing here.Put new seal on old sender and had same problem. Tank was replaced with new one back in 05.Dosent appear to be cracked around the opening to tank but stranger things have happened. When I installed it it didn't leak immediately. I just barely pushed on sending unit and it's starts dripping. Seal isn't torn and it's in the correct place. It has a black tab on it.Dose it make any difference where the tab on the seal sits.Im at the point of just buying a new tank and be done with it.

Super hard to diagnose the problem without seeing it in this case. Tempted to say that potentially the flange that the locking cam for the sender fits into in the tank itself is distorted so as to prevent the cam from locking into the ridges.

It's like the ring is too small for the the part of the tank you to rotate into but it's the same size as old one . The strange thing is it will tighten up but with some force I can tap side to side. The tank part dose really look distorted. At this point I'm thinking about replacing the tank. Its amazing it hasn't leaked going down the road. When I fist put in it didn't leak till I just barely bumped the ring and then it wouldn't quit. Frustrating at the very least.

Dosent make sense. The part on the tank looks fine.I took the spare tire carrier off to do something else and barely bumped the line coming out of the sender and it's been trying to leak ever since.

If it was cracked you think it would leak all the time. Arg

I don't recall if you said you replaced the sender itself. Maybe it is the plate on the sender that is tweaked. When I replaced the sender in my 70 it took some stiff taps to get the cam to lock in over the ridges. It really needs to seat in there and then should not move at all...zero.

Sorry re-read and clearly you did install a new sender.

Any chance you could get a couple of pics up?

I had the same problem with a new sending unit gasket leaking no matter what I did to correct the leak....I tried 4 times to stop the leak!

I had a piece of Teflon "sheet" that was 1/16" thick and large enough to make a flat gasket with.

I drew a round gasket pattern on the Teflon sheet and cut the pattern out of the sheet so that it was the same diameter as the metal sending unit.

Then I cut a hole in the center of the Teflon gasket big enough to fit around the metal tube and electric connection.

I installed the new sending unit black gasket....then the sending unit...then the Teflon gasket that I made....then the locking ring.

It took some work/force to get the locking ring to lock securely.

Everything stayed firmly in place/nothing would move at all.....the tank quit leaking......finally!

I would be happy to but I don't know how. I can email you as many as you need. I wish it was as easy as Facebook to post pictures. The ring itself is pretty tight.I hate to put in new tank and have same problem but it would fix it I would do it in a heart beat.Warmer weather around corner and I want to be back on the road.
