I know I'm getting old and weak, but this rubber grommet is beating me up. It's not very soft, and I'm really having a time trying to install it. Any tips? I've tried the usual plastic and wood tools and I can't get this to drop in place and trying not to damage it. I've tried it both ways, from the top and from underneath.
Hi nc,
Have you put any lubricant on the grommet?
I find even a little vasaline helps slip grommets into place.
I slip one end of the grommet into place and then use my smallest screwdriver to pus around the bottom lip of the grommet to get it to slip into place too.
Regards,
Alan

Tnx, as always, Alan. Yes, I have used lubricant (silicone grease) with no luck. I even heated the grommet thinking it would soften it a bit. I might make a tool to better capture one end to get more 'push power.' I guess I should have worked out more before this restoration!!
Hi nc,
I don't think it's a matter of enough pressure.
Try SLIDING one end of the grommet in place, you should be able to get about 1/3 of it seated.
Then use a tool like a vert small screw driver to push a small portion of the bottom lip of the grommet down through the hole.
Try the tool!

Alan
No go. It's just too large for the slot. Got the back third in and still couldn't work the lower lip down into the hole. Got fed up with it and ground the lower lip in about 1/2 way. Still plenty enough to seal, and it was still a byotch to get in, but that finally worked. Had to clamp onto the lower portion that you feed the cable into, and it allowed me to pull the back third into place. After that it was a matter of shoving the seal back pretty hard and working the lip with a tool to get it to drop in place. This would have been an even nastier job if the interior wasn't gutted and no windshield.
Not that it matters now but I had a similar issue with this one and the one with the various vac. lines going in.
Ended up wrapping a piece of string around the groove, getting it in as much as possible from the top (white grease) and pulling the string down from the inside under the dash and it popped the remaining lip into place.

(Probably should have just cut it as you said.)

Oh man, where were you this morning? LOL. That sounds very worthy of a try! The others went in like 'normal' grommets.
