old school here and definitely not up to the guru status some people seem to have. A tooth off will not stop you from timing a small block chevy. The timing is the relationship between the rotor and the wire in the cap. If you do not care what it looks like you can drop the distributor in mark what terminal on the cap it is pointing to and wire from there. I do not recommend this and with a tach drive you have an added complexity. But being a "tooth" off will not stop you from timing the car.

I agree completely so llong as the vacuum advance doesn't hit either the fire wall or intake manifold.
