finally installing my interior in my 76. I am installing the lower cover for the steering column but cant seem to find in the assembly manual how it goes. I have a metal backing brace that the column cover attaches to but cant seem to find how that attaches to the lower dash. I have the one screw hole in the bottom of the column but....What am I missing here??
The lower pad had two J nuts on it at the bottom. The lower two screws went into these J nuts... The bracket for the over-ride was just positioned in between the screw and the J nut if this makes sense.... The third screw went into a plastic nut made in the steering column.... If you need a pic of this post back, I can get you one.
And this is exactly why I love the pdf assembly manuals over the paper ones.. you can find the stuff quickly if needed.. UPC 12C, Sheet 7.
ahhh that makes sense I figured I was missing some parts, I have item 3 and the cover plus all the hard ware. I am missing the pieces that are attached to the pad itself. How are these held to the lower pad or are they part of it?
Those tabs are part of the lower pad. It's common for them to break off. You may have to make up some new tabs and find a way to secure them, or replace the left lower dash.

thanks that's what I was afraid of....I just replaced the lower dash with a MINT one or so I was told LOL what a pain in the **** it was. I think I may make some tabs and use interior screws to hold them to the tower pad so that I can attach the column cover. Hope nobody puts me into the bubba category over it!!
Whatever performs the job well, so that others can't see it, is not in Bubba's repertoire.
If you make two sheet metal (alum will not rust!) strips, each with two holes [one for attaching it to the dash pad lip and one for having a sheet metal 'nut' to slide over], they should do the job well. Two #8 chrome or SS sheet metal screws will hold the strips to the dash edges and two more will go through the lower cover and bracket to hold them all together. Don't forget the short screw to hold the center of the cover up. And make sure it is not so long that it digs into any wiring running under the steering column.
