I've been trouble shooting an issue with the reverse lights (they don't come on) and I've figured out that the switch, bracket et al is missing from the trans (72 BB 4 speed). The one thing I'm having trouble with is locating the connection for that switch. If someone has a pic of this connector it would be a tremendous aid to me in fixing this problem.
Hi r,
The connection for the back-up lights is a lead that comes through the firewall from the dash harness in the same grommet as the tachometer cable and the oil pressure line.
The lead is about 6" long once it comes through the grommet. The lead on the back-up light switch is about 24" long.

Alan

Thanks, I think I see that but it appears to be in PIA spot. BTW - any suggestions on what I can use to clean wiring and connections?
Ok, I need a little more help on this project. I have the backup switch installed (who the hell designed those mini coder pins!!!) and working properly but only one reverse light is coming on (driver's side). I switched bulbs with the same result so the bulbs are fine. I checked the wiring in the back and things appeared to be ok but I'm new to these cars so perhaps there is something specific I should be looking for.
I gave the socket a good shot of WD40 before I tested it. Where is the ground on the back side? I'm thinking that is the issue but need to locate it first.
Hi R,
There is a ground for each taillight housing on one of the mounting studs.
It's a black wire that's part of the rear harness, and loops from stud to stud.

Alan

Hi R,
Good!!!
I hope the first picture is upside down…. if it's not the transmission is installed upside down!

I'm upside down with the camera so it looks a little weird. The funny thing is that I learned there is only one way that switch can be mounted in order for it to work properly. Though hardest part of the whole job was fitting those tiny little retainer clips on the link rod.
