The AIM sort of looks to show that the cardboard center compartment tray is permanently fastened to the car by sandwiching it between the three-door plastic frame and the car. It this correct?
It would appear some bending is required on the repop cardboard tray to accomplish this.
There should be some metal clips that hold it in place on the compartment tray they are s shaped and about 1/4 " wide and slide over the edge of the cardboard tray. You shouldn't have to bend it.

I just had mine out as I carpeted the lids. With the lids off the " tray "remains in place. It can be lifted out then. I had to patch mine on the battery side. It stays in place by fitting into the bottom of the lid assembly. Then there are screws from the lid frame into it. You'll have to disconnect the box light to take the tray out.
Hi AZ,
As sug and kjb posted:
The liner is held in place along it's rear edge by the 3 screws for the compartment lid that pass through the liner.
In addition there is generally 1 small clip about mid-way along the liner's sides.

Alan
Screw holes (note 1 screw was very crooked on this liner.)
Hi Doug,
I've not seen the clips offered anywhere.
Since the liner actually sits on the fiberglass underbody once it's installed I think you can successfully install it with just one clip.
As far as I can see the clips aren't even shown in the 71 AIM.
Regards,
Alan
FWIW, I see what appear to be three professionally drilled holes and screw head recesses on the left side of the large plastic surround to hold the side of the tray (using typical screw clips on the tray), with the clip on the right side. i see no scuff evidence of a clip on the left side of the old surround, like is evident on the right side.
Not sure if that was dealer fix, or PO fix, or what.
Just rebuilt my 72 door set two weeks ago. Mine had one S clip per side and three screws at the rear. I went with speed nuts and flush screws all around in the recessed holes. The S clips appear to be the same as the ones used for the seat cushion bottoms. If you go with the screws remember the need to be absolutely flush or they'll bind on the door frame.
I don't see in the AIM where retainers are specified either.
