Was wondering what you guys thought about changing out the ignition coil. I'm doing a basic tune up, plugs, wires, rotor, cap etc and wanted to get your thoughts on also changing out the ignition coil while I'm changing out the distributor cap. If I'm not having issues with it now should I leave it be? How can I tell if it should be changed? Appreciate the help.
I'm sure you've heard "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If the engine is running fine with the coil you have, then you're wasting your money. Unless, of course, you're looking for more "bling."
When a coil fails, it usually stops working completely and the engine quits. Sometimes they stop working when they get hot and start working again when they cool down.
I'm not much for all of the hype around super high voltages, etc. If it works and it's not causing any type of problem, leave it and spend the money on a good set of wires and plugs. Money much better spent.
Thanks LB, appreciate the feedback. Being married with children, money is definitely a factor. Hope I have everything put back correctly as next week I tackle the plugs and wires and then the coolant. Should take care of things for a while so I can enjoy the week-ends. I've never done a set of wires and plugs like these so any suggestions are definitely welcome.

Do one wire at a time. Image if you will ripping all the wires off and then realizing you don't know which one goes where. Yep, seen people do it. Also check and gap the plugs. Pay attention to each each one to give you clues as to what's going on with the engine.

Do the heat shields need to be removed? I've also seen a few posts that some plugs are easier removed from underneath the car and others from above. Any suggestions on this? Thanks.
