Hey everyone, I want to install my hooker super comp headers (#2134) on my 1981. I was planning on rebuilding the carb (stock e4me) in the next week or two when the kit gets here. All emissions stuff has been removed. I want to keep the ECM so my question is this, should I install a bung for the 02 sensor? My understanding is that the signal from the 02 sensor is used by the ECM to determine fuel delivery. So the ECM will basically control the dizzy, carb and trans lockup correct? As long as it's hooked up and I install the 02 sensor it should work properly correct? If I'm missing something please let me know
yes, install the O2 sensor, the system needs it. instead of installing a bung in the header, you can buy a header collector that already has the bung in it from Jegs or summit. it's the piece that adapts the end of the header to the exhaust pipe.

Thats what I was thinking. This car has a vac advance distributor but still running the original CC carb. I'm hoping by installing a CC dizzy, rebuilding the carb and then adding these headers (with O2 sensor) will help this thing run better and have more power
it probably will, this system really needs ALL the components to work properly, not so much the smog stuff but everything else. If you already have the vacuum dist. why not just get a standard carb and forget the computer all together?, finding someone to tune the CC-carb is going to be problematic unless you can do it yourself? there are some special tools needed to set up the carb so it has the best chance of running right.

it may be worth it to go the other direction
I agree with jigalow. I'm not real up on the computer controlled carbs, but the sound like a spin in the as$.
YOU BETTER BE REALLY CAREFUL if you go in and rebuild this carb. The setting of the mixture control solenoid is precise...and I would replace it along with the TPS sensor also.
Unless you have the tools and KNOW HOW....I would advise you to step away from it and send it off for servicing....and even if you do do that...there is a special tool you will need to adjust the TPS sensor. These are available... and using a volt meter or a scanner to read the TPS sensor value...that will take one thing out of the equation.
One thing I check before I remove the carb is while it is running...I turn the idle mixture screws in until they stop/seat and see if the engine dies ( one at a time and count the number of turns IN while doing this also)....if it does NOT die or stumble and tries to die...then you have fuel seeping into the engine...which makes the idle mixture screws useless...which means that you can not control fuel at idle..which is a problem.
