I'm in the middle of a rebuild on my TH400. This is my first time seeing the labyrinth and I'm unfamiliar with what it should look like. Is this just normal casting flaws or what? To me the edges should be crisp and sharp, not this. Is this casing junk or can I proceed with the rebuild?
I just put a shift kit in my TH350 and the labyrinth was clean with no erosion on the edges. Now the tranny only had 21000 miles but I don't think it should have that amount of erosion. I think in a very short time it would start leaking across the channels.
Most of that is just normal "breakout" of the edges on a die casting that is being milled over an intermittant cut. It does no harm to the part or to the function of the part. The fact that the tranny has been working OK for more than 40 years is evidence of that.
You DO NOT want to burr those edges down. The more surface area that is flat, the better. That will minimize and pressure bleed-off between passages. If you see any LOOSE hanging material on the edges, it would be good to remove that. But, after this long, I suspect there won't be any loose stuff still there.
