Default alternator question

The amp guage on my 76 vette started jumpimg all the way to the right on the guage then back down then way back up to the right on the guage. At a redlight it goes toward the left or discharging side on the guage. I understand the voltage regulatior is built into the alltinator. I had the alltinator checked when it did this about 2 months ago at auto zone on their testing machine and they said the alltinator checked ok. Question I have is if the voltage regulator inside the altinator is going bad will the alltinator still check good. After I had it checked that first time I put it back on and it worked fine till now. What do you think is happening.

Their checkup at The Zone should have checked it all. I would suspect loose cables or bad grounds somewhere. Did you check the belt to make sure it wasn't slipping?

Default Good call to check the belt first.

Then check the wires and connections where they attach to the alternator.

You likely have a problem with wiring or connector(s) going to the ammeter.

The small stud comming out of the alternator seemed to be stripped because the nut wouldn't tighten up it just got snug then kept turning. But it stopped jumpingway over and back. Will take it to an outo electric shop and get a new stud put in
