Default Shift Light Hookup?

Does anyone have experience with a shift light that hooks up to a "conventional" ignition (not MSD)?

Without going into details about the why, I'm trying to get a Proform shift light from Summit going on my '73.

The connections are in what I call temporary test mode, but sound.

Black wire to battery, and it's connected to the horn relay stud under the hood.

Green wire to negative pole on coil.

Red wire to a switched 12 volt lead, so I've got it connected to the 12 volt lead that connects to the electric choke on the Holley SA. The lead comes right off the IGN connector on the fuse block in the car.

It's one of the adjustable units, and I set it a 4,000 rpm for test purposes....got nothing.

The only variables I'm not sure about, is that the original distributor contains a Pertronix module, and the coil is a high energy unit. But it seems to me the signal at the negative pole of the coil would be about the same as if the car still had points, as far as the interface with this unit is concerned.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

For what it is worth. If ti wired in as per the instructions...and it is not working...i would call the tech line of the light manufacturer and talk with them.

It seems like it should work...but i do not know the internal working of the light.

Not sure but mine has the black wire as ground, red to a 12v source and the green gets the source signal. Yours may be different.

on my 72 the horn relay is the major connection of alot of positive wires under the hood.
ie: direct feed from the alternator.

black should go to an earth/ground connection. ie:chassis
