Default turbo 400 valve body

Hi....... I plan to remove the valve body out of my 400 transmission and would like some info regarding how difficult it will be..... Do I need to worry about little springs or ball bearings that will fall out ? I have the pan out now..... and need to know what the next step needs to be....

Thanks Walt

Check ***** will fall out. If you are installing a shift kit, the instructions with the kit will show you where they belong. If not, you need to get the ASIG book for the TH400. It will have the locations. Trans still in the car, you can stick the check ***** that go on the case side of the spacer plate in the case with a big wad of Vaseline. Unless it's really hot outside.
If you're planning on a shift kit, I'd recommend either Trans-Go or Gil Younger's Mr. Transmission. I've had excellent results with both. Set them up for police/taxi per the instructions.

I've done shift kits with the trans out of the car and it was a PITA, in the car is even harder for a novice. You may want to call a few trans or hotrod shops and see what they would charge for the install. If you screw it up, they'll charge a good buck to put it back together for ya.
If you have experience playing around an auto trans, than go for it.

There are check ***** in the valve body and they are not all the same. So, you need to keep track of what ***** are in the v/b and where they were when you removed it. When you removed the v/b, try to keep the v/b level as you drop it. If you can, the ***** will stay in there and you can make note of where everything is once it is placed on your workspace.

Also, there are additional ***** above the separator plate (between plate and bottom labyrinth of main case). You need to leave enough bolts in that plate so that it will stay in place when the v/b is removed. Then, with v/b removed, you can look up into that separator plate and mark/make note of where the ***** are and what they are (material and color). When you reassemble the parts, you can use a thick grease blob [or Vasoline] to stick those ***** in place while you install the plate. Do the same with the v/b.
