Default 68 seat belts

I am currently trying to reassemble a 68 corvette i did not take apart. My question is about how the seat belts run through the metal guides and carpet.I believe the rear outer belt guides are supposed to be under the carpet. If this is true, it means cutting the carpet under the seat for the belt to enter the guide assembly, and cutting the carpet again where it leaves the guide. These guides are retained 3 places with 3/8 bolts. Anybody have any experience with this?

The '68 A.I.M. should detail how the seat belts were routed. Unless there were changes made to that design during the model year, the A.I.M. should be your best reference.

I agree with 7T1: the 68 AIM shows the installation. The belts mount in the floor under the carpet. Each side has a cover, also under the carpet which routes the belt over to the door sill. Each side has a guide on the door sill, also under the carpet.

Not sure if the assembly manual i have is the same as what you are reffering to. I do not see A.I.M. on the front cover, just 1968 assembly manual. The seat belt package purchased for the car has a retract mechanism which resides under the seat. My assumption is it would reside on top of the carpet, not under. It would creat a large bulge in the carpet under the seat.

On my 68 its all under the carpet, it only comes out from under the carpet after it goes through the guide on the way up to the seat. I actually didnt know mine had retractors(theyre frozen solid) until I lifted up the carpet when someone posted a similar question.

Does the guide come through the carpet, or just the belt? I have seen a grommet in some catalogs, just not sure of the size, what passes through.

On mine, just the belt and there is no grommet. But its completely possible that my carpet has been replaced at some point in time.
