I have a stock TH350 transmission, with what I assume is a stock converter. I will be driving this car on the street, but also bringing it to the strip now and then. Should I stick with the stock converter or buy a different one? If so, which??
Re: Torque converter- do I need a different one? (jerryjfunk)
Jerry, I don't know which cam or rearend ratio you have, but if it is a stock ratio rearend (3.08) then you probably could use a higher performance convertor. A B&M Torquemaster 2400 is a fairly inexpensive convertor that will give you good performance on the street for about $150.00. TCI makes a good convertor also I think it is a little more expensive.
IMHO, a 2400-2600 convertor is about as high as you want to go for street driving. A 3000 would perform better on the strip, but sure would make street driving more difficult.

Yep, as far as I know it's the 3.08, and street drivability is more important to me than strip performance. Thank you for the advice! Does anyone else have some input?
EDIT: I just read in the for sale section that Mike has a 2300-2500 B&M for sale http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=347353 But I just read B&M's description of it, and it says "for mild performance under 350hp". The only ones that take more power are higher stall speeds...
About page62's comment... does anyone know how much power a stock TH350 can take? I won't be using slicks, but I plan on getting wider rear tires than my current 225/70/r15's.

Go to car craft and read the artice on "Whats up with stall" in the tech section http://www.carcraft.com
Gives a simple overview.
Click on car tech in the box on the top of the left hand side of the page and a drop menu will come up and click on tech articles

th350 will be fine on 450hp as long as you dont go grabbing second gear at too high mph. The band with scrorch or snap. Breaking the sprag is also a weak link but again avoid abrupt downshifts. I'm assuming your trans is in "good" cond. and not a 90k miler. I shift kit would make for less slippage also and provide a nice firm shift. 2300 rpm stall about as high as I would go. Dacco, TCI and B&M all make good products. Keep in mind two diff. engine combo's with same convert. will stall at different speeds. Read the article mentioned by "Nomad78SA".
Good luck and change that front seal every time. Pump O-ring too if you know how. Save you a leak later that would mess up your driveway overnight. Front seal will leak as you drive.
Re: Torque converter- do I need a different one? (jimvette999)
Here's a question. I just read the converter article and the editor says "Heavy cars with tall (numerically low) gears..." I thought the higher the number, the taller the gear became. I'm running the stock '79 auto gearing which I'm assuming from what I read is 3.55. I was always told my gears are taller than 3.08s not steeper. Could someone verify this to me? I always thought taller meant numerically higher gears.
Re: Torque converter- do I need a different one? (Phoenix79)
A taller gear means your engine is turning lower rpms. That's why overdrive has always been considered "tall." So if you're talking about rear ends, 3:08 would indeed be taller than 3:55. :smash:
Re: Torque converter- do I need a different one? (jerryjfunk)
Jerry, I'm @ 430 hp w/ the 72 and I use a TCI Street Fighter - Stall rating is 3000 rpm - keeps it streetable but makes for a he!! of a ride when you want it :jester
Re: Torque converter- do I need a different one? (jerryjfunk)
Jerry,
I'm sorry. After reading my own post it appears as though I was talking about the upshift. I meant downshifting is hard on certain parts.
You can UPSHIFT the TH350 as high as that motor will wind!
