I bought a 71 Corvette today in Tampa. Almost immediately, the car developed a miss. Cruising at 60-70 mph, it was missing (skipping) terribly. I made it to a garage and the mechanic took it for a ride with me. He suggested that I change the wires and spark plugs. We found that a couple of wires were crossed and it seemed to idle better.
We took it out for a test drive and the skip is still there. I'm trying to get the car back to CT. by the end of the weekend.
Is there anyone in the area that may be able to take a look at it for me or recommend someone I can take it to. I have no tools.
I was thinking that the timing may be off. The garage I took it to didn't have a tack/dwell or timing light.
the only guy id recommend is in west Melbourne and is farther away, why don't you call Don Garlits Museam and ask for a referral they are in Ocala and you might even get lucky and get Big Daddy to look it over, its happened before.

If you have too much total timing the car can surge, disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose and see if that helps until you find a shop with a timing light.
Not wanting to sound like a jerk, but buying a 71 vette in FL and driving it to CT without any tools? Really?
Yea, really. Thats why I have towing and a credit card.
What I meant by not having any tools was, I could stop anywhere and buy the tools needed but I certainly don't have a place to work on it. I know in this day and age, there are not a lot of so-called mechanics that I would trust to work on anything of mine. I really don't like taking my car to a stealership, thats where they make all their money but not off me.
And, I thought the previous owner would have done what I asked him to do, which was to have the car looked at (tune-up, brakes, oil change, etc) so it would be road worthy prior to me leaving. That didn't happen.
I left the hotel this morning to take the car to Burnyzz and it quit running. Pulled over and called them to see if they could tow it to their shop. I spoke with John and he recommended that I call Carter's. Carters towed it to Burnyzz and they jumped right on it. What a great bunch of people there!!!!!
I thought maybe the fuel pump had crapped out but once they started looking at it, they found:
After a few cranks
and:
So they are now cleaning out the tank, resealing the tank, blowing out the fuel lines, changing fuel filter and adding an additional filter.
well isn't that, special! I'm glad it is getting the attention. im sorry you weren't closer id have made a run up. good luck and let us know how the rest of the trip goes.
Yes, it hasn't changed very much. They want to keep that small fishing village feel.

If you make it that way again, give me a heads up and I'll show you around and maybe have a lobster dinner.
