Default 454 engine noise

I know this is a longshot, but if you have a guess as to what this clacking sound might be.....

Hold a long screwdriver handle to your ear and touch several areas on the engine. Especially the valve covers. That will help locate the problem. I'm thinking a push rod has been dislodged from a rocker?

It's hard to tell through my cheap laptop speaker but it could be as simple as an exhaust leak.

Yeah, it seems to have that "putt-putt" sound of an exhaust leak. Take a piece of hose, put one end up to your ear, and hunt around with the other end, you will know when you find it if it's an exhaust leak.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me too. Perhaps a bad header gasket?

I tried the screwdriver trick, I didn't find any significant difference in nose or vibration at various points around block. The noise doesn't seem to change from cold to warm engine. Car seems to drive fine and make good power. I'll try the hose next, I like the idea of an exhaust leak, that sounds less catastrophic. As a matter of fact, the noise seems to be most auidible around the front drivers side. That's also the location of the bolt that goes through the alternator adjusting bracket, and through the manifold.... A bolt that I recently changed. There is about a 3/4" space between the bottom of the bracket and the top of the manifold. The PO hadn't put a block through the alt bracket, and I had been having problems with belts and pulleys, so I changed and put the bolt though the bracket into the manifold, but didn't put a spacer. This seems silly now..... I'll get out the hose to verify, but it appears the power of the forum has solved another crisis. Thanks all
