I have a 1979 corvette that the previous owner put the T700R4 in. I've been driving it for four months now, originally I didn't have this problem at all but it got worse today. Whenever I accelerate(Not every time) it stutters and I sometimes here louds clicks and it sounds like its coming from right below me so my guess is the transmission... It doesn't seem to have any problem with going through gears but I can mash the accelerator and it doesn't go as smoothly as it should. Any ideas?
I would guess that the PO did not install some kind of controller for the lockup clutch. If it is working, it probably comes on automatically and is powered-up at all times.
This is not a good thing, as the lockup clutch is only meant to be used under low-loading, constant velocity operation (highway speeds when cruising). The lockup clutch cannot absorb much torque, so the clutch must be disengaged when a significant amount of throttle is applied. If there is not a 'lockup controller' wired into the transmission, the L/U clutch will stay on and be trashed by the power running through it.
If the tranny sounds like a metal box full of loose nickels when you step on it, the L/U clutch has already become "toast". You can either disconnect the L/U clutch system (electrically) and run it without that feature; or you can have your transmission rebuilt and add the needed lockup clutch controller box to prevent that from happening in the future.

I honestly don't want or use the lockup feature. He did install a little green switch next to my shifter but I haven't touched it so maybe he left it on? If I just flip it off should everything be good or is it done for? Is a guide to disconnecting the clutch system electronically somewhere online already? I don't want to waste your time, I really appreciate your answer! Also if I were to disconnect the system all should be good again? Or do you think it's still too far gone..
