Just rebuild my steering box (fun!!) and while I was at it pulled the steering column to investigate a grinding/squeaky noise. The steering shaft lower bearing was siezed. I got it worked loose and pumped a quart of grease through it but it is very noisy. Anyone know who sells them??
I don't know if it's the same part for all years, but I bought the bearing and the adapter around it for my -72 from a local GM dealer. I was surprised that a european GM dealer would have them in stock!
Good topic! I am in the process of tearing down my T&T column too. Mine felt very nice and tight, but as I disassemble, I can feel some play in the shaft, where I assume there should be none. I am assuming this is the bearing wear (right?). Anyway.....what is the method of bearing removal and installation?
I checked all the big vet vendors to no avail. I'll give the Cevy dealer a try.

Its an intersting setup on the 68. There is a loose fit bearing & bearing race backed by a spring. The spring keeps tension on the race sorta shoving it under the bearing. If the bearing siezes (like mine) the steering can still turn inside the bearing and race. Everthing on mine was pretty rusty including the spring and race. It felt alot tighter when I got in back together but still a litle ruff. I'm sure the ball brearings are pitted. If I find a source I'll let you know.
Check the www.corvette-paragon.com website, they list L1967-68 lower steering column bearing (2nd design) for 25$. It does show both their and GM part number so it might be available from GM also.
I had the same noise in mine and had the whole column gone over as long as it was out. I gave the mechanic the info that I got here, but not sure where he ended up getting the parts. BTW, thanks to all for the help and I'm enjoying driving it again after about a month in the shop.
