Just recently purchased a 78 L48, totally stock. The Stock exhaust just doesn't have that deep sound that I like. Would it be better to change the whole stock exhaust system or can I just change the mufflers to magnaflows or some other brand to get the desired sound?
Total novice here but learning
Thanks for the help
When I got my 79 L48 it had factory exhaust with cat removed and some Magnaflow copies. It sounded really nice and strong (lots better than it really was). If all your after is sound and local laws allow I would copy this setup.

Same year and engine, I changed to true dual exhaust with 2" pipes and Flowmasters. Only other change is a mild cam. I like the sound better than when it was stock.
It is home built by my brother in law, a friend and myself. All stainless 2.5 in with X pipe and dynomax vt mufflers. It's a 79 with a 406 and 234/244 @.050 cam
I'm right there with you. I have a 78 L48 as well. Just got it as well. Its got a Dynomax system on it with a cat. I've been looking at doing a chambered exhaust set up. They are pretty loud. I haven't done much research on how they perform though. Not trying to hijack your thread, but does anyone have any thoughts on chambered exhausts?

Do you happen to have a part number for dynomax Vt's and xpipe you used?
'78, L82. True Duals. No cats, Hooker headers, Flowmaters (don't recall which ones, no baffling), no crossover or x pipe. Unknown (possibly stock) cam. QuickFuel carb.
Vid (if it works). Don't mind the little puff of smoke. Valve seals are leaking a bit, AONTHER winter project.
Sound is a bit off as this was taken in the garage with an iPhone and it echos a bit. But it'll give you an idea.

Installed a chambered exhaust last winter. 2.5" on the 69 L48. Lots louder, a drone at cruise speed, lost some fuel economy, friends say it sounds like a truck with bad mufflers. Just doesn't have a sharp crisp sound. Might have something to do with poor engine compression, it ranges from 127 t0 163 dynamic. Going to fix that this winter. Will probably try some resonaters to eliminate the drone. T
on a stock L-48 the only exhaust that's going to give you any grunt is Flowmaster 40s or 44s. I would just take the mufflers off altogether and start from there. a low compression L-48 doesnt make that much noise

That sounds great with that motor. My 355 with 10.2:compression and roller cam with.525 lift sounds similar. How much lift in the cam and what compression?
If you don't need the catalytic converter then the dual exhaust from Corvette Central sounds pretty good on my '77. Sound much better than the factory exhaust. You can get them in 2 or 2 1/2 inch (2 inch for stock L48) with hideaway or Magnaflow mufflers. I have their hideaway design and like the sound, although there is a little resonance around 1500 RPM. They are surprisingly quiet on the highway with a 3.08 gear, but sound nice cruising around town.
There are very few states that require a cat except for the usual suspects out of step with the rest of the nation. Chances are that you do not need a cat-go with 2.5 inch duals-2.5 for maximum power and efficiency-nothing less on a 350. If you do need a cat to pass inspection, don't use the rear OEM Y pipe exhaust, if possible, but 2.5 inch duals with high flow cats-chances are no will know that it came with a 2-1-2 cat exhaust EXCEPT the usual suspect states.
