Jim, now you'll just confuse people by bringing up the fact that all the oil in the engine isn't at the same temperature.

Still, the bulk oil in the pan or the oil as it's pumped from the pan is typically what is measured by an oil temperature gauge and at that location it still does not have to reach 212*F for the oil to have a full service interval.

I still go for the boat theory. Its designed to run low temps and no problems yet and its 33 years old..
