Several threads talked about messy procedures to drain the differential oil. I used about three foot length of 1/4 inch ID hose and made a simple siphon. Closed one end of the hose and filled it with oil. Placed the other end in bottom of the differential and put the closed end over a container lower than the differential. Opened this end and the oil slowly drained out.
Yep. That's how a siphon works. With warmed diffy oil (drive it before you drain it), that wouldn't take too long....but a larger line would be better (as big as will fit thru that fill-plug hole). With cold oil and a 1/4" line, I'm not sure all of the oil would make it out. [Lots of surface tension with thick, cold gear lube.]

I just checked the ID of the drain hose-it was 5/16, not 1/4 as I had said. Diffferential was at Florida room temperature-80 degrees.

Just curious, how to fill up the differential? I use an old additive bottle with the nipple cut with a large opening. Fill, squirt in, fill, squirt in, repeat.
I add the new additive after the first new quart of fluid is put in.
I use the full quart bottle that the fluid comes in and attach a piece of clear plastic hose. Squeeze the bottle and watch till the fluid starts to overflow.

I warm the bottle in the sun or a hot pan of water and hold it above the level of the differential. Gravity does most of the work with a few squeezes of huge bottle needed.

I just went to pep boys and spent 10.00 on a suction pump. they are back there by the grease guns. had very little mess removing and installing the the fluids with the same pump. I cleaned it out real good in between removal and refill. it was simple and worth the ten bucks
Isn't anyone concerned about the metal and sediment at the bottom of the differential?
They would be if they dropped the unit and pulled the cover. Every single one I have opened up was full of shavings and debris to varying degrees. I cleaned my 72 out thoroughly with mineral spirits, blew it out and and refilled with Amsoil 80W-90. Ran it many years and dropped it to install a date correct unit. Oil looked new with no fillings. Sold me on synthetic gear lube.
