I believe typically there should be none.
Something's loose.
What have you checked?
Could be in the column, the connection of the column to the bracket, or the connection of the bracket to the cowl.

Thank you Alan.
I've not checked anything yet, as I really didn't know where to start. It's a telescopic/tilt job, and my first inclination would be something's not right with the tilt mechanism. Haven't looked at the books yet, but is it difficult to get in there without special tools or skills? (emphasis on skills)

Jim Shea ..... I followed his in car adjustment and lost all the play in my steering . Fig 3b-15 item 18 takes small movements to remove steering play . Good luck
