The Corvette used the "short" tail housing. Here is a helpful pic:
That being said, since you are looking to change, make the switch to a manual 5 or 6 spd....you won't regret it. Costly, I know, but well worth it. So glad I did it to my vette. Also, your RWHP numbers will be higher!
Just read a lot on gear vendor o/d unit I like that better then the electric O/D units I have been looking at ..
Who know which tail shaft length the TH400 has for use in our C-3
I've read recently that in a c3 the driveshaft may be too short with a GV in place. Have to clearance the tunnel as well. I'm curious to see if you decide to do it. I installed one on my old '98 Trans Am-it's a trick piece.

I have a GV in my Chevelle it is a nice piece. Basically my 3.73 turns to a 2.90 when engaged. Shifts very quick and you can either do it manually through an electric switch or have it come on automatically at like 50 mph. I would say 99% of the time I just leave it in automatic mode. You do not need to change your shifter either as it is electronic. It is expensive but similar when you look at the other options. I would say it is a game changer on drivability for guys with a 3.55 or lower as the highway is not a RPM daunting as it was before given the guy in the Prius next to you is doing 75-80. I have 3.73, I was doing 3,000 at 60 it is now 80 or so at same rpm.
I took the TH400 out of my 77 and replaced it with a 700r4. There are enough go fast parts for the 700r4 that it should live behind most non-race powerplants.

True......
My "previously owned" $300 700R4 in my 4,000Lb. '34 street truck is going strong......I don't abuse it----BUT I DO have fun with it......and it gets 16mpg City/23mpg highway with my 290HP 350SBC/2100RPM@60MPH/2300RPM@70MPH.
When my TH400 gives out in my car.....it's getting a 700R4 also. There are some 700R4 Vendors, but the rebuilt 700s "ain't cheap".......(I'll buy "used" 700 A/Ts and rebuild them myself).
