Default Bird cage

I have a 69 that has a rusty rocker channel. I would like to replace it as well as the lower hinge plate that attaches to it. Does the front clip need to come off to make this repair?

I know you described your problem but pictures would be more of a help. I doo believe you front clip must be removed in order to have clear access. The rocker channel replacement is more involved and depending on your skill sets and welding can be a challenge. There are some posts available right know showing before and after pictures. Good Luck

I replaced the front section of my birdcage/ rocker channels without removing the front clip. Not exactly fun but it is possible.

If your rocker channel and lower hinge plate needs replacing, chances are so do parts of your windshield frame. Take a look at it before you dig in too deep.

I replaced my rocker channels including about 1 foot of the lower A channel without removing the front clip. But you will not be able to weld the front part of the A post because the firewall is glued onto it.

As stated by previous posts, this is an involved project, cuts need to be very precise as well as alignment of the new sections assuming you are using parts from a donor car.

You can get new sections for the lower A post and rocker channels where you do not need to remove the original parts. This is a much easier option.

Also, if this is a convertable, keep in mind that when removing the channels, you have no birdcage integrity unless you build some support frames around it.
