Default Brake Console & '70 Corvette

I thought replacing my aunt's brake console was going to be fairly easy but disconnecting it from the emergency brake front reinforcement and/or console front bezel is proving trickier for me than I anticipated.

I'm sure I'm missing a simple step. Can someone help me?

When you remove the console, there is a hidden bolt in the rear storage compartment. If you have found this already, great.

If not, here is where it's located.

Once you have the old one out and you'll have to transfer the retainer, the chrome trim and the reinforcement to the new console. Then you place the forward trim bezel on the shift console and feed the parking brake cover in place. The trick is to make sure you keep the parking brake slide in place while you get the console down on top the shift console. The slide must not have any interference when you feed it in place. If it does you'll fold up the slide the first time you use it.

I hope this helps.

There is a screw under the middle rear compartment that holds the back end of the brake console. There are also two screws on each side down by the seat, if you use a long screw driver and push down on the seat cushion you can remove them. You may have to lift the emergency handle a little to remove the console. I never install the rear screw on mine and never had a problem with it being secure, you will understand when you try to reinstall that screw. If you removed all the screws it just pulls back away from the front console.

Willcox,

Thank you. Yes, I noticed this bolt this afternoon with my flashlight and was trying to figure out how to get to it. It looked like the only way to get to it was through the front with a special tool and that's where I got stuck. Am I correct on my assessment?

Steve,
On my 73 we were able to access the back bolt by reaching through from the jack storage compartment. You can't see the bolt but can feel it and get a wrench on it. Hope this helps.

Remove the (upper) bin in the right-side storage area; use a 1/4" ratchet with a 7/16" socket to reach in and remove the bolt.

Hi Steve,
Here's the bolt looking from the jack storage compartment as 7T1 suggested.
Once you know it's there it's pretty easy to reach and remove/install.
On my 71 the original bolt takes a 3/8" socket.
Regards,
Alan
