I'm excited now to get these replaced and still feel like an idiot but I learned something new so that's a plus.

YES IT IS...I am SURE that you will never forget this information.

I HOPE it all goes well.

Even if you get the plugs in and it is running fine...I still connect a scanner to is and make sure it is doing what it is supposed to do....and IF it is still running a bit 'funky'...I would obviously check the KV of the plug wires and also fuel pressure...,,,and as much as I hate to write this...UNLESS you know for a fact that the harmonic balancer is NEW...is to check to make sure the notch on the balancer is CORRECTLY positioned and has not spun. AND YES...the outer ring of the balancer can spin...because I have had some that have moved 1-2 inches. This way you know when you go and time it...the notch is correct and you are not setting the timing at a number that 'does not make sense'....because you assumed the notch on the balancer is correct...and it is not. Just a thought.

Well an update, changed out the plugs and the TPS sensor and all I can tell you is holy crap this car runs great now. I wasn't able to drive it due to salt on the roads now but I started it and let it idle for a very long time without the idle fluctuating like it has before. It was amazing how far the new plugs go in when you get the right kind. (Thanks Mark!) Had a little carbon residue behind the exhaust which maybe since I did not have the plugs all the way in the combustion chamber it was not making a complete combustion and was carbon up?? Just a thought.

So as of now I really like the way it's running but won't really know till spring so thanks guys for your help.

Timing marks are often off due to the hormonic balancer shifting. Seat of the pants and testing is the only way to nail down an old engine or go through the hassle of finding true TDC. The timing mark wondering is usually caused by slack in the timing chain. The advace is done electronically from the TPS and MAP sensors. I agree with above statements about the timing being bumped to 10-12 advanced. I run my 82 at that level too. The knock sensor will usually pull timing before detonation becomes a problem.
