Default 1972 CA l48 engine

For curiositys sake what cam was put into the California L48 engines? It quoted to have longer overlap..

Also what was the point of it?

Hi,
The NB2 code appears to indicate an engine headed to California with a different carb, emission controls, an AIR pump, and a different cam.
Are these the CDH and CDJ engines?
PJ… haven't answered your question…. increased emission control for stricter requirements in California than in the rest of the states?
Regards,
Alan

I was unaware Calif. cars had different cams. Would love to know the specs for a base model 72 Calif. car. It is stamped CDJ.

thanks Tom

Hi,
The cam specs (lobe lift) are listed in the Specification Section of the Chassis Service Manual (Engine Section 6).
I only have the 71 manual so I can't check it for 72.
For 71 they're .2600" for intake and .2733" for exhaust. This compares to the 71 LT-! cam of .3057" and .3234", for example.
The overlap isn't noted.
Regards,
Alan

The engine I have is a CDD code L48 I know its not a vette engine but im sure its the same thing.

Now I seen it in a verry detailed spec thing from 1972 on the chevelle and its simular cars as well as another sight too. The book gives specs that are what im sure are exadurated.

The reason I ask is because I was thinking it was the 929 cam but now im not to sure of this and wanted to know. What cam grind it was

Btw the engine was a junk yard find of a odd nature.. runs good and has good oil pressure.

Do you guys got any idea what camshaft that is as I see its not a 929 cam.. or would it be just like the 929 cam.. trying to get a idea of its base power in desktop dyno so I can see what I can do with what I got.. as I know that works off gross hp bot net lol..

And dose anyone know what purpose this difrent cam served? Extra power to deal with the extra crap or?

Gross HP numbers are not available for 1972 I believe. GM did not specify a different rating for California engines AFAIK.

The 'smog crap' took an extra 1 HP to drive as compared to non-AIR cars.

I don't recall seeing published horsepower rating differences for 1971 and 1972 California versus non-California engines. In reality the different carb and cam that were geared toward lower emissions must have delivered less horsepower, right?

would be my thoughts too but the chevelle L48 CA and non CA version are both 175HP for 1972..
