Can anyone recommend a set of mufflers that are a little louder than stock but not outrageously loud. I've looked at Flowmasters but there really is no way to tell how loud they will be. I have a friend with a 73 Vette with Flowmasters but they are outrageously LOUD !
I went thru this with my 1980 a year ago. I went with the Magnaflow mufflers from Corvette Central with their dual exhaust system. Louder than stock but not by much. Only when you really get on it is the sound much louder. Wish I could be of more help but what's loud to one person could be to quite for someone else.
I just installed a pair of Thrush mufflers. The welded ones, part # 17655.
They are louder than stock, but at highway cruising, can barely hear them. These were $40 ea. at Advance.

I have the complete Flowmaster exhaust system made specifically for the 1980 corvette and a high flow catalytic converter. It sounds perfect to me, not too loud but has that nice muscle car sound. There are some youtube video clips, but it sounds way better in person.
I like Dynomax Ultra Flo and Magnaflows - any straight-through style with baffling. The flowmasters tend to be a bit more on the obnoxious side and many of their designs impede flow.
The Ultra Flos and Magnaflows are a bit deeper than stock and sound great when you stand on it. They can get pretty loud in radical setups, though.

With stock manifolds and converter it won't matter(nothing should be obnoxious) much what you do.If you have headers and a hi flow(or cat delete)cat then the same muffler will be louder.
I have a pair of 2 1/2" Magnaflows, gathering dust in my shed, that I bought to try out for my 74. I ran them for a while and decided they were a bit too loud for MY taste. They might be perfect for you.
I can sell them to you for cheap, if you are interested. CC wants $235 for the pair, new. How about $100/both plus UPS? Shipping from NJ.
I also went with corvette centrals dual set up with magniflows. sounds good when you get on it and they sounds good cruising highway but wish they were a bit louder.
That's the sound I'm looking for!! I just hate the thought of getting the system welded. Is it a stock motor?
No it s a 11:1 406 with 1 3/4 headers 2.5 duals with x pipe, its not a system you can buy. I bought the mufflers and home made the system, wish I had done the 3in now but oh well
On my '81 I have complete 2,5'' X-pipes from Pypes exhaust,no drone during cruising, but more torque at low RPM insetad of conventional 2 lines pipes.
I wondered how those systems were about drone, the system I replaced was so bad the drone was louder than the wind noise with windows down. Now I can hear the 355s in the rear whine.
I have the Dynomax Super Turbos on my 1980, with the cat cut out. They are louder then stock but not over the top, I also chose these because the fit was pretty much a stock fit to.
Another vote for Flowmaster. I have the full 2 1/2" cat system from the ram horn manifold back on a stock '80 L82. I would say it is about 15 percent louder with a nice tone. I live close to Flowmaster R&D. They used my stock setup to develop the system.
