Default 1975 remote mirror cable routing

The driver side window on my 75 will not go all the way down because it is binding on the cable for the remote control sport mirror. I have looked for some place to attach the cable to keep it out of the way but I do not see anything that it can be attached to. Does anyone know how the cable should be routed so that the window does not catch on it? How do you access the cable? I have the interior door panel off but still do see any way to access the cable. Any advise would be appreciated.

The mirror was not made for the car...they had the chrome mirrors that had no way to adjust the mirror with a joystick like the mirror you have now.....so the holes up by the upper hinge to door bolts were not drilled out to route the cable.

You have to fabricate or use a strap/'zip-tie' to hold the cable towards the upper hinge bolts.

This is NOT going to be easy to do...because I have done many. But that will depend if you want to do a crappy job...or one that works. That is the difference.

When i installed the remote mirror on my 75 i drilled a 3/16 hole in the metal door panel and riveted an eyelet/hook for mounting the cable holder.

I then used this as my anchor place and them fabed up a 1/4 20 drill rod with an eyelet on the end so it was adjustable. Also ended up with wire ties and a dab of RTV so in wouldn't come lose.

As Dub said is a real pain, the trick was to mount the mirror to the door and then have my wife hold the remote control in the app place it was going to be mounted. Since the door panel is still not installed it was easy to see how much the cable had to be moved out of the way

Now all you have to do is figure out how to get the interior door panel installed and hook up the retaining clip that hold the remote control in place.

Enjoy

Thanks for the replies. I did not think that a remote control mirror was an option in 75 but this installation looked so good it looked like it came from the factory that way. I have owned the car for over ten years and the window did not bind until recently. I am guessing that the cable was previously secured somehow and has now come loose. However, I see no evidence of how it was secured. I thought maybe I was missing something.

You have to remove the access panel at the bottom of the door and reach up to get to the cable and do whatever you need to do to get it to hold and not stop your window from going all the way down.

Also remove this small access panel, the bigger panel at the bottom is for the access for the electric window motor.

I believe manual and electric doors are the same for both these access holes.

the small access area at front of door only lets me get to the door hinge bolts. the bottom access is for the window motor.

This small panel will not aid him because the 1975 did NOT have sport mirrors...so the holes that WERE installed from GM are not there...that can be accessed though this small upper hinge panel....in order to route the manual sport mirror cable.

I stand corrected, Dub is right, the upper smaller access panel will only get you to the door hinge bolts.

All you were off was a few year models...But as I wrote...if the car came with remote sport mirrors...this upper hinge bolt access panel MUST be removed so the cable can be routed and away from the window.

Anybody have a picture of where they installed the mirror's remote "joystick" on a 75 style door panel?

Where ever it will work. Look at a photo of a 1977 door panel with the sport mirror option. And if my memory serves me correctly..the door panel will be deluxe for this also...but do not hold me to that. You may have to cut some of the steel out of the door shell so it will work.

Would it work to remove the cable remote and use the sport mirrors manually?

Default Solution on '74

I ran into the problem of window not going down after my car was repainted and I reinstalled the remote sport mirror and cable. When I took the mirror and cable off, prior to painting, I was not aware of any hooks etc. used to hold the cable up and didn’t see any when I started re-assembly.

My solution was with the window up and the bottom access panel removed (that covers the electric motor for window), I could move the cable up to the top ledge of the side impact safety guard rail and let it sit there. With the joy stick end of the cable in it’s expected mounting position it seems to form a very taunt loop with the cable between the outside (on ledge above guard rail) and the inside of door. Especially when I rotated the joystick end counter clockwise to make sure the up motion of joy stick really made mirror go up. Just to be safe I added a tie strap to hold cable up high on the inside of door (see pic).

This was not very difficult to do. I left the excess on tie strap just for pic and then cut it off and everything has been working fine.
