I have been reading through the thread and also need new tires and wanted to go as wide as I can without having to modify anything. I want to have the same size front and back and I want to keep the stock rims. Currently I have 225/60R15. I have read that the 255 may cause problems in the front. Is there a way to know this before buying tires? I wanted to know the widest tire I can put on all the way around without issues.
I have BFG 245-60-15 on all four on my 73 and as stated earlier on this thread the front tires just kiss the frame when the steering is fully locked. I like the idea of having all four tires the same width and diameter so I can rotate them.
My 69 had 255/60R/15s on the original wheel when I purchased it. They did rub on the front when turning hard. These are 215/70R/15s all the way around which are equivalent to the F70/15 Wide Ovals that were original equipment. Great improvement in ride and handling with no rubbing.

Thanks
I mounted a 255/60 on the spare wheel and made tight circles in a parking lot with it first on the front and then the rear to satisfy myself they'd fit without issue.
