Hi All,
Im looking to clean up some of the bolts and small parts on my 73,found this on line. Has anyone ever tried this and how did it work out? http://www.caswellplating.com/metal-...xide-kits.html
Thanks,
John
Hi John,
It works terrific.
It's the easiest to do of the 3 common plating finishes found on many fasteners on our cars.
The part must be scrupulously clean and you have to wear gloves if you're going to touch the part.
Even the small kit is plenty for our use.
Regards,
Alan
Hi K3,
Black oxide is used for fasteners and when the part is dipped in an oil based sealer after the bath, (that's part of the Caswell kit), gives quite good protection.
The parts you'd use it on wouldn't be candidates for powder coating and although you can paint the fasteners with paint I believe the oxide coating and oil dip give better protection. Plus the wrench doesn't knock the oxide off the edges and corners during installation as it does with paint.
Here's a picture of a black oxide coated bolt and a manganese phosphate bolt. (The oxide bolt is a little shiny because the oil dip hasn't dried completely. After a couple of days the bolt's sheen will be somewhere between flat and semi-flat.)
Regards,
Alan
