Yep, happened to me on my 68 gauge cluster. I was working on getting the oil gauge to stop leaking and somehow bumped the temp gauge needle and spun it around. I thought maybe broken, but I positioned it back close to where cold temp would be and reinstalled and it worked great. So no big deal, hope this helps, not sure how it is set up as I did not try to figure out the internals.
Had an issue with mine when the connection came off at the sender and shorted intermittently (touching on - off very rapidly) to the engine block, the needle went crazy. I thought for sure the gauge was wrecked but when I hooked it up it worked okay.
