Okay so I am just looking to find out what or how much of a drop people are using on the air cleaner base with a stock mid year hood.My car is a 76.
I have searched previous posts and got discouraged looking a lot of comments but no real answer.
Yes I really need a a cowl hood but with all the other modifications I am doing the funds are not there. So I must use what I have.
Intake is a 2701 and carb is 3.5 to the base of the inlet.
I have a 77 which I believe has the same hood as a 76. I have an RPM air gap manifold with a Qjet and a 1.5 inch drop base open element air cleaner. The element is 3 inches tall. I also have a 3/4 thick adapter between the carb and manifold. This fits under the hood, barely. Without any adapter you will have no problem with the same drop base unit. (I don't use a wing nut because it won't fit.)
I bought a fully enclosed drop-base air cleaner (for CAI purposes/ugly, but it works) from Jegs several years ago....the base nearly contacts the carb screws and throttle-arm because it drops so low/probably 1 & 1/2" - 2".
Have you tried a 2 & 1/2" or a 2" high air filter with a drop base air cleaner housing?
Thank you the info is great. I currently am waiting for the block to come back from the machine shop for assembly, so no I have not tried anything as of yet. The car still has the original block in it so it will go into the corner after it gets pulled and wait to be gone through.
I have two engine projects I am doing right now LOL so then when those are done the Vette will get its chance to be on the surgical table.
Here's a very simple 14"x3" washable filter I got from Summit for about $35. Big enough to feed a 486hp 383. It's dropped 1.25" and I'm using a thick gasket to clear the stock vacuum port on the AirGap RPM. Still have a minimum of 1/2" to the hood. It's in a '77 with an L82 style hood.

BK - what size gaskets are you running for that? Looks like 1/16 or smaller. 2 of em?
Yup, thanks. I may be going performer RPM soon so my setup would be pretty similar to yours.
Just fyi, I had to use an adapter because Edelbrock doesn't make an RPM air gap for Vortec heads and spreadbore carb. If you have other heads you probably won't need the adapter.

Thanks - I'm on G1 style AFR 195s and intend to run a non-air gap setup (7104, RPM Q-Jet) to avoid the flange problem. I'll block or possibly fill the crossover passage to minimize the heat problems.

I have been running a 7104? RPM using a Lars rebuilt Q-Jet on my 383. Had to use a drop base air cleaner w/an open element filter. Stock hood on my '76 closed fine.
I was concerned about the lack of cold air intake to the carb. Finally a forum member, Paul Dana I believe, came up with a cold air intake air cleaner. It picks up cold air from over and in front of the radiator. Unit fits like a glove and the stock hood closes without problems. Workmanship is excellent, well worth the cost. I don't know if he has any more available. E-Mail him to check.
