I just purchased a 85 amp chrome alternator from Echlers by Powermaster. My problem is that to install it with the 82 brackets in the stock location all the connections are 180 deg's off and the wires for the plug on the side is not long enough. Is it possable to remove the 4 bolts holding the case together and rotate it 180deg's?

Not a problem. I did it to my 65 amp that I bought a year ago. I think that early Corvette alternators were unique in the way GM clocked the rear housing.

Hey Bob,
Yes you can pull the 4 bolts and the case will split. Usually there's some type of warranty tag covering the seam so you don't open it and swap out good for bad parts. Just pull the bolts and rotate it without removing the case otherwise you'll have to seat the brushes with a paper clip.
Eveybody, thanks for the info. I also got the bright idea of changeing all the belts. What a pain...Have to take the engine compartment apart to do it!
I just went through this too. I replaced the 32 amp unit, with a Delco 63amp. It was 180 out as well. It's easy to just to spin the case around. I had the Elec. shop I got it from do it and then test it just to be sure.
Gary,
How far out can I pull the case without disingaging the brushes. There's a lug on the case the will not clear without pulling it out a bit.
I'll also give a report on the Powermaster's when i'm done.
Bob, you should be able to pull it apart without doing anything else but the 4 screws. Just spearate as you are trying to rotate it. When I worked as a counter guy we did this all the time because of the different locations for the 2 wire plug to the regulator. Let meknow if you have a problem-worse case is you have to hold thebrushes in if you pull the case too much. You'll see where they are held in. Too bad you didn't have it with you last night we could have run over to the garage and swapped it.

Thanks Gary,
I'll try it tomorrow, I have to get this car back on the road or I'm in trouble. The wife wants to start detailing and can't while I'm working on it. Candlewood is this coming weekend!
