I'd like to remove the pin striping on my car. It's about 25 years old now and it looking really horrible. The paint is fine underneath the striping so if I can remove the pin striping without damaging the paint underneath it will be fine. I talked to some guys and they recommened using a *heat gun* ? What would you guys recommend?
It's very simple. 3M makes a spray can product that removes decals and decal adhesive. You can find that at automotive paint supply shops, or ask a body shop where to get it.
Also need some rags, and a plastic putty knife. Spray the stuff on thick, and let it soak in for 10 or 15 minutes, and then scrape gently with the plastic putty knife to lift an edge, and the whole thing will probably pull right off. It'll leave the adhesive behind though, so just spray on another coat, and scrape carefully with the scraper. You can do final clean up with a spray-soaked rag.
Be prepared to find that the paint covered by the pin stripe has not faded like the surrounding paint. That may have occured. Hopefully not too bad, but it was pretty bad on a red car that I had done. Red fades about the worst of all the colors though.
yeah, I tried the heat gun. It works fairly well but when I started doing it the paint was slightly a darker color. There are like two rows of the striping, a thick one and a thin one. The thin one comes off fine and is the same color but the thicker one is a different color from the rest.
I'm not sure if I want to remove it all now. The striping is in bad condition. I want to remove it but I won't be able to repaint for about a year. $5k to paint the beast, and I don't have that kind of money atm.
