Can anyone tell me the best way to go about removing and installing a new radio. (AM/ FM receiver). After removing the passenger side dash panel and the small side trim panel on the console, can the radio be pulled out from the side. Much appreciate the help. Dave.
it was a pain getting the factory am/fm/cb unit out of mine. i was ready to pull the engine and cut the firewall .seriously i got it out but i couldn't tell you how.
Yeh, i agree it is a pain. I've had it apart years ago but i was wondering if I was going about it the wrong way. I believe the shop manual (which I read about a week ago) says you can pull it out from the side but I don't think so. Some have told me that you can loosen the small nuts on the two threaded post at the bottom of the gauge bezel then tilt the gauge bezel forward to give room to get the radio out. But I think it is just about impossible to get at those nuts with the radio in place. I finally decided to loosen the complete shifter console and gauge bezel and slide it to the rear about two inches or more, then the radio will come out. Ultimately I think that is the easiest way. By the way just for those who were following my Engine Build, I have not fired the engine yet. I have been working on other issues with the car like this Dash rebuild. I also have to do the rear end. Dave.
It can be done, but it is a PITA. When you get everything 'ready', just don't get impatient. It may take some "creative manipulation" to work it around and get it out. If you get in a hurry, you can do damage to wiring or other 'stuff' in the area. Be patient and take it slow.
Oh, when it does come out, remember how you did it. It will have to get installed with the exact opposite of the removal steps.
P.S. My recollection is that it comes out the right side trans tunnel access cover.
