I am going thru a 72 454 that I bought and replacing the coil. There is some discrepancy in the catalogs on what color the original coil is. The one on the car is black on top and bottom but the replacements are all black on top and gray on the body. Does anyone know what the correct color is?
Hi m,
I believe the original coils had the 'can' painted black while the top was black bakelite. I'm not sure if it was painted or not. My guess would be it wasn't.
Regards,
Alan
You beat me 69V while I was trying to figure out how to spell bakelite.
Does anyone know where to get one at, or a part number? I ordered one from ecklers and it came with a black top and gray can.
I bought one for a small block from NAPA a couple of years ago and it had the black can. Check their web site and see if there is a pic of the currently available coil.
Most of the Corvette parts suppliers sell a reproduction of the original, but they aren't cheap. The Oreillys house brand coil is all black and costs around $20.00.
FWIW, I believe the reproduction coils are "canned over", showing the embossed ID, to replicate original. The problem with this is that the original screw will not reach from one side of the coil mounting bracket to the other, due to the larger diameter of the repro coil. If complete originality or judging is important to you, you'll want to know that while the repro coil looks nice, the use of a longer screw will be a give away that the coil is not original.
ALL coils of this type are now made overseas regardless of color or markings.... If its important to you, searching ebay for NOS (new old stock) would be one way you may find a real one.
