Lower windshield seal
I dropped a razor blade while scraping some residue from the inside of my windshield on my '71 coupe yesterday. When I dropped the razor blade, it slid down between the top dash pad and windshield. My first thought was that I'd never see that razor blade again. Low and behold, when I looked though the wiper grill, the razor blade could be seen laying beneath the wiper linkage. This means that there is an open air gap between the windshield and lower windshield frame.
Am I safe to assume that the lower windshield should be sealed? Or is this part of Astro Ventilation that allows outside air into the car? The windshield in my car appears to be the original that it left the factory with in January 1971. I don't know for sure if it has ever been out of the car, but I'm guessing not.

VERY interesting!
It's safe to assume that the windshield should have been sealed around it's entire perimeter.
A look at the mfg logo and date code in the lower right corner of the glass may be an indication as to whether it's the original or not.
The source of fresh A-V air was was through the 2 dash ball vents ducted to the hinge pillar air plenums.

Here's the remains of the lower seal on my 71 glass. If you look closely there appears to be 2 tracks in fact. One that's part of the perimeter seal of the glass into the windshield frame and then an additional track to seal the lower part of the glass to the cowl.

Thanks for the pic of your windshield sealant. Looks like I'll have to try to work something up in there.
My lower right windshield has the following words to the right of the PPG logo:
SUNSHADE
SOLEX
DUPLATE
LAMINATED
ASI M53 2512

Hi Rick,
That logo indicates a replaced windshield and a likely cause for the gap your blade found.
You don't have to get the sealant all the way up. Just a bead right at the joint between the glass and cowl, worked into place with your finger, will do.
