Default dual quads

So I have a spare quadrajet is there anything to gain by putting a dual quad setup on my 78 vet L-82, Aluminum Heads 64cc/200, 1.6 rockers with headers and duals.

They look really cool...and sound great when WOT!!

They can actually run very well also...won't make more power than a good single carb/intake (a 750 cfm carb isn't a restriction on a motor this size), but they can be fun. A buddy ran a set of 500 cfm Edelbrocks on a $50 junkyard 302 with a set of TFS heads, mild hyd roller cam and headers in his '67 Mustang. Ran 12.60's all day long and drove great.

I played with a set of Q-Jets on a tunnel ram once....ran great and really sounded good out in the open like that!

No.

One Q-Jet has way more fuel/air capacity than your engine will ever need. Nor do I think 2 Q-Jets would even look cool on any engine....and I'm a Q-Jet fan!

Q-Jets are spread-bore carbs: each has 2 small primary throttle openings and 2 LARGE secondary throttle openings. I'm not even sure how you would ever balance the fuel load with two Q-Jets--both having idle and choke systems.

An old-school tri-power setup made of 3 small-base Rochester 2g carbs (the one in the middle having the idle and choke systems) would be much better suited to a SBC engine, IMO. But, since you don't have those carbs, maybe you'd be better just keeping the intake setup you have.

LOL....I gotta agree...Q-jets are definitely not aesthetically pleasing!! Just like AFB's/AVS's...I hate the look of them alone..but when two are together it's pretty good looking.

The Q-jets I used on a tunnel ram idled and drove well on a nasty 396. It was easy enough to adjust secondary opening to keep bogs away....but truthfully they probably never got the air valves open all the way anyway.

We actually tried some Thermoquads also 'cause we had them laying around. The Q-jets were better.

Couple of Holley's were better yet.

If you want the dual quad look...I'd just get the package from Edelbrock.

OK thanks for the inputs. I will just keep it as a spare. Car is running great as it is just running out of things to tinker with.

I remember those..boss at the time usually took them off threw them in the trash and started over. That and the goofy electronic ignition some of those Chryslers had at the time.

There was a place in town that bought old Highway Patrol cars to use as taxi's of all things. They had 440's in them. We always had lots of spares available. They actually worked pretty decent...we used them on a lot of stuff.

If you could spin that motor at 12000 RPM, the secondaries might crack open
