Default Introduction and first question...

Hi All,
I live in Central NJ and I'm actively looking to purchase my first Vette (C3) specifically a 68-73( I just like chrome I guess).

I was wondering what was missing on the firewall of the 1970 Coupe pictured below(see arrows).
I'm guessing it's some vacuum actuated stuff that may or may not be needed.

Please let me know.

Thanks
Brian

That would be the vacuum canister and linkage for the wiper door. It appears you are missing the door and grill as well.

Welcome to the Forum!

My rookie guess would be vacuum controls for the windshield wiper door (which has been removed).

Maybe a longer hood was installed?

Hi Brian,
Welcome! Looking for for a new old Corvette!! NICE!!!
Everyone's right on.
The car is missing the windshield wiper door and wiper-bay grill, plus the vacuum actuator and limit switch for the wiper door on the firewall.
Here's a picture to give you an idea of what those parts typically looked like for 69 through 72.
They're only 'not needed' if the hood has been changed to a long hood (started in 73) that covers the wiper bay.
Regards,
Alan

I agree with Alan and everyone else. It looks like someone changed to a long style hood since all the parts have been removed. Not a big deal but if you want original it can get pricey to replace. Mine is gone since I went to a long style L88 hood.

Thanks everyone for your help with this.
Attached is a pic of the hood and it definitely looks like the longer style.

Wiper door and grill...I know my 70 Camaro sure didn't have one These cars are an animal all on their own aren't they?

The more I know, the more confident I get that I won't get screwed when I decide to pull the trigger and buy one.

Thanks Again.

But 68-72 Corvettes did. No disrespect Whisker, but what do you know about C3s? Knowledge is power. Reasonably good reading here:

Good luck with the hunt.

You would be in the minority of C3 Corvette buyers. Most buy and then come here looking for answers.
You are lucky you can post pics of potential of candidates and put them up here along with any questions and you should avoid any getting a bad one.

That is an awesome offer blue.
I live in Jackson, about an hour south of you.
If i get close enough to pulling the trigger and purchasing one, I may see if you are available for an inspection, I would compensate you for your fuel/time of course.

I'm trying to find a "driver quality" C3 for under $10k.
The only problem is that I like the chrome bumpers and the 68-72, even 73 are priced waaayy higher that the 74 and up models.

So another question:
What are the "usual suspects"(problem areas) to look for on the C3 models?

I'm an ex. auto mechanic -w- a degree in auto repair so I'm pretty mechanically inclined and can do most repairs, except bodywork and paint, I have no patience for that stuff.
The problem I have found so far is that if you want a sub $10k 68-72 Vette it will need a certain degree of, um, bodywork and paint.

Truth be told, it will probably need a whole lot more than "a certain degree". You may stumble across a sweetheart, but in your price range, you are likely to be looking at project cars.

I didn`t know there was such a thing!

I would think you`d find more upper 70s.... like 78 to 82 in that range. I think a good driver 76 or older at that price would still be hard to find.

Check out "10 rules for buying your first C3"... great advice here!
