I just replaced all the vacuum lines on my 71. I had this valve left over. It's a check valve with 3 ports. Everything works (thanks to DUB). The only funny thing is when I first start up the wiper door goes up and down.

The valve you're holding looks kinda like a replacement for the three-port zinc check valve that attaches to the vacuum source (the intake manifold). Without the check valve the vacuum tank would remain empty and cause your headlights and wiper door to lift until vacuum builds up high enough to close them.
The picture of the valve you have is for late model Chevys. I have replaced a lot on s10s with that valve. The 71 would have a metal valve like this one from corvette central. http://www.amazon.com/1968-1982-Corvette-Vacuum-Check-Valve/dp/B000JBYG4Q
Hi HT,
The valve in your picture really can't be a replacement for the typical gray metal check valve because although it has a large nipple for the single vacuum line coming from the white filter, the 2 nipples leaving the valve must be 2 sizes…. one large nipple (the same size as the nipple entering the check valve) which supplies vacuum for the 'servo side' of the vacuum system, plus a small nipple that supplies vacuum for the 'control side' of the system.
I believe the configuration of the valve stayed the same during the whole 68-82 period.
A reproduction is readily available.
Regards,
Alan
Alan I have the exact same set up as your picture. I was just curious if I forgot to put something back. I think that plastic one was there in place of the metal...I can't remember.
