Adjusting Hydraulic Lifters
Lash while running is a waste of time.
If the lifter is plunged the correct predetermined amount while each piston is on TDC.....that is it. No more to do and it cannot get better than that.
Some solid lifter cams cannot be lashed this way due to the ramps....The Duntov 30-30 being one of those.....
Go to the track....watch the top teams lash their engines. The bump it with a remote button and watch the rockers. Pro Stock does it this way too.
Furthermore....on hydraulics....I tend to plunge them as little as possible. 1/2 turn works for me.......the reason here is that so the lifters have less chance of "pumping up" at high RPM.
Boats are notorious for wanting as little plunge as possible......all that load...then shut off....the lifters hold the valves open and the engine likes to stall. There is still a pile of oil in the lifter that simply cannot bleed off fast enough.
