Default Under hood temp

The temp under my hood seems excessively high. As in i can't touch the dipstick without gloves hot! Engine tennis are fine...around 210. This is without the hood on. I'm worried about fuel billing once i put the hood on. 77 with a383 and side pipes. I hate to wrap the ss headers, but I guess that's better than a fire. Anyone have any other tips to lower under hood temp? Is this common?

You've lost me. With no hood on the car, how can you come up with an underhood heat figure?

A dipstick handle should not need gloves. My guess would be your handle is too close to your headers.

Is this a new engine? My new ZZ454 was very hot for about the first 500 miles. When you shut down you could hardly stand beside the car with the hood open. I added an electric fan because as soon as it stopped rolling the temp would quickly climb to 220. Once it got loosened up it cooled down. Now the fan does not come on except when idling for extended periods.

Ok Mike...fair enough. Engine bay is too hot. Oil dipstick is pretty close typ the headers. Trans is far enough i would not expect that level of heat. Either way, out feels pretty hot just leaning over it odd pretty unbearable.

Yes it is a new engine. Good to hear that it may cool down. I'll let out go a while and just watch the temps to makers I'm not overheating. I may still wrap the headers...although i don't know how good i can do with them on...don't want to pull them again...they are a pain to get in and out of there!

Yep, when new piston rings break in the engine gets hotter than usual for the first 100 miles or so.
