Default Middle Console face plate

Hi all!,

trying to put 69 vert back together & snap pics for all...

BUT looking at shifter/face plate on console...the whole metal piece...and wondering if I can freshen this up? maybe with some low gloss black spray paint?

thoughts/ideas?

thanks,
R

I restored my console with a flat black rustoleum and a tiny paint brush and it came out great. I wanted to keep it as original as possible.

FWIW: I used the old, original 5-ball Krylon semi-flat black, but that was a while back. A hobby knife blade scraped across the letters and a q-tip dabbed in lacquer thinner removes the semi-flat black.

you can scrape or rub the fresh paint off easy,
I like to use a plastic razor blade for this, or an old credit card cutup as scrapers
if your careful, and not touch anything else.
and I just completed replacing the fiberoptics,
with Leds, for all the indicators. no problem seeing the leds work now !

Just did mine! Stripped all the old paint off and resprayed with Duplicolor Trim Paint.

Matches perfectly!

Hope this helps

I'd like to offer one more piece of advice regarding which paint to use on this project. I use SEM Trim Black in a spray can with excellent results. It's a little more expensive to buy but it flows like butter and matches the OE sheen perfectly. As has already been suggested, the chrome reveals can be cleaned up by scraping with a credit card edge before the paint cures (maybe 10 minutes after spraying). I have an extra console plate around somewhere. I will dig it up and post a pic soon.

Hope this helps.

Great info guys!!!

Not to sound stupid...what did I use to strip paint? And procedure?

Had a local guy say not to bother stripping and just coat it and use steel wool on the edges to clean, and a q tip w brake cleaner to take off on lettering...

Thanks for the help!!!
Ron

Any chemical paint stripper; follow the label directions. You can also soak the part in brake fluid since brake fluid will eat paint.

Some folks say oven cleaner will strip paint.

Hi mpls,
Here's an example of a shifter plate restored using Krylon #1613.
I use a x-acto blade to remove the paint from the surfaces that should show the chrome plating.
It takes a bit of time.
Regards,
Alan

All the console semi-flat black can be repainted. HVAC controls are their own problem since they have a clear lens in them. Depending on condition, it could be best to completely restore the HVAC controls as a separate job.

Hi F,
The controller lenses are readily available for only a few dollars and are a fairly easy swap when restoring the rest of the controller.
Regards,
Alan

this is what I did... and then I covered it with the woodgrain insert since I had the deluxe interior..

I bought new lenses and shifter slider covers on ebay from a vette store... all went pretty smooth.
