82 ignition breakdown when hot
Should I be searching ebay for old Delco parts in the packaging? I assume that anything new from NAPA or ??? is Chinese crap.
Who has been down this road?

I guess you have done the tests that are in the service manual to verify IF the coil is good/ WHEN it has the problem that causes you to write 'breakdown'.
A lot new parts come from China....even AC Delco And sometimes that is NOT a bad thing...IF the company having parts made there have TIGHT quality control. YES..I KNOW....it seems that if it says "Made in China' it is automatically considered to be a piece of crap.
All I will 'say' is this. If you get a new coil...I have seen many that were installed my someone else that have black paint on them...and when testing the coil...this black paint is NOT allowing the ground strap UNDER the coil not properly contact the coil housing as designed. SO...I have to scrape off the black paint and check it again. This also applies to the black wire that is secured to the coil housing.
AS for the ignition module. Gm made a module for the 1982 and 1984 Corvettes with its own part number. I used to be able to buy this specific module...but now it has a new part number and now seems to be grouped in with other module applications and given one number. Does not make sense....seems like a 'saving money' thing. Why change it if it was specific originally.

I checked the coil per the manual (pg 6D-32), and it flunked test 2 as it was open circuit from output to white wire AND output to ground. I assume the module is original and I've heard that modules are prone to failure Thought I would do it now.
I appreciate you gents providing some insight. I'm not good with electrons.

To test your coil stick a 1/4" X 3" bolt into a spark plug wire then hold it near a ground while the engine is running. It should put out a blue spark 1-1/8" to 1-1/4" long. From my many years of experience I have found most HEI failures are a result of a bad module.
I know some folks will scream when they read this but I always use Permatex Ultra Black RTV under my modules because it transfers heat better than the silicon grease.
