I have a stock 1981 California car and I don't have a lot of options with the emissions laws here in California.
I'm thinking about installing electronic exhaust cutouts on my exhust system and have a few questions:
1) Has anybody been down this path?
2) What kind of performance gain might I expect?
3) What might I expect to in costs?
4) Do I have to worry about the heat coming out on the floor boards?
Don't want my rugs to catch fire.
5) Will it be so loud my ears will bleed?

Go the other way.
Alum brakes
Alum master cylinder
Sanden A/C compressor
Alum heads
You CAN use a better cam and pass smog
Magnflow high flow cat
Sugar scoop headlights
Taking off weight is a big deal.
Sorry about the image size...can't find my resizer. These alleviate the block hugger/sidepipe restrictions pretty good and sound great, not too loud IMO...flip a switch and all in....see a cop....flip a switch and back to quiet.
Made by QTP and are the oval shape...great for ground clearance. I had to make the turndown myself from some scrap I cut off their collector...their turndown was not a turndown at all and exhaust was hitting floorboards.

What is it you are trying to achieve? I also have a cali vette 82, and wanted to put side pipes on the car. I met with a reputable exhaust shop, they also wanted to install cutouts that would allow me to use the original exhaust or the pipes. I didn't care to use the stock exhaust so we didn't install the cutouts and the exhaust comes from the pipes all the time. Sound is great and it passes smog because the catalytic converter wasn't removed or relocated. Cut outs can be done but I cant answer about the loudness or heat.
Take a look at this thread... https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...done-this.html
If you're using a fiberglass spring in the rear, make sure the cutouts don't point at them - once C5s got cheap, plenty of guys who otherwise would have bought cheaper cars put turndowns on them and nuked their rear springs.
FWIW, I have a pretty fast smog legal 78.
TravisF - I highly recommend adding some mandrel bent pieces to your system - particularly this section:
