I recently got my car running again after having some problems with the starter and after a few good days of driving I started hearing this squeaking noise. First time I noticed it I couldn't really hear it unless I pressed on the clutch, but now its noticeable as soon as the car starts up and gets even worse when the clutch is depressed. From what I've been reading I believe it could be the belt, but I just wanted some more input before I go out and buy a new one. Video taken right after starting.
I'm certainly no expert, but at first glance I'd suspect the clutch throw out bearing is going bad, based on the change in sound when depressing the clutch pedal. See if you can crawl around while it's running and pinpoint the location of the sound. It'll be centered on the bell housing if that's the case.
How's your clutch pedal free play? The bearing shouldn't make any noise at all unless the clutch is depressed because it won't be engaged. If it is the bearing, and it makes the noise without the clutch being depressed, you don't have enough free play. You want 1" to 1.5".
The noise is slightly odd in that it doesn't sound metallic enough to be a throw out bearing; it sounds like a belt, but the action of it when you depress the pedal does suggest it is in fact the bearing.
I'd get someone to depress the clutch for you while you poke around to listen for the sound as suggest above.
Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try to find the source of the sound when I get back later tomorrow. Also I was messing around with it the other day and I realized that if the clutch is pulled back as much as possible towards the driver, the noise goes away almost completely. You may be right about the free play, and I'll be taking a closer look at the throw out bearing. Thanks again!
